Ukiyo-e Woodblock Print – Bijin-ga
An Ukiyo-e (Japanese woodblock) print depicting a Bijin-ga (a fashionable woman).
The Ukiyo-e genre of paintings and prints consists of five main themes that celebrate the hedonistic pursuits of the sensory world: beautiful women, landscapes, samurais, kabuki actors and shunga (erotica). Originating in the Edo period (1603 – 1868), they provide a vivid portrayal and historical narrative of pleasure seekers in bustling Tokyo.
Interestingly, the origins of the word Ukiyo is deeply rooted in the fundamental Buddhist concept of unsatisfactoriness that underlies human experience. Ukiyo-e is an ironic homophone and the art form thus alludes to the pointless pursuit of pleasure and frivolity by the various subjects.
This woodblock picture would sit well in a dressing room or it could be a really fun and special addition to a gallery wall.
Professionally framed and ready to hang.
Dimensions: 55cm height, 43cm width

Product Story
"Konichiwa", the staff behind the desk at Aomori's ferry terminal greet us with typical Japanese alacrity. It's 7 a.m. and we feel utterly exhausted. Having driven over 700km from Tokyo's Narita airport over the past couple of days to make it this far, it is perhaps inevitable.
