Ceramic - Kushiro Vernacular Pottery Bowl

A small speckled bowl in earthy brown hues embodying the everyday beauty of Japanese vernacular craftsmanship. The palette of warm terracotta tones offset by a drip-glaze painted in cream, creates a visually stunning effect.

This will make a really thoughtful present for a matcha lover. Or else as a pretty serving dish for olives, nuts or anything else you like to nibble at while working from home or watching TV.

This bowl is handmade by a self-taught artisan, inspired by the rich agricultural heritage of Hokkaido. By creating a textural interplay between the clay and the organically flowing glaze, the potter has endeavoured to highlight both farming and animal husbandry - the two cornerstones of Hokkaido's economy.

Product Story
Hokkaido

"Konichiwa", the staff behind the desk at Aomori's ferry terminal greet us with typical Japanese alacrity. It's 7 a.m. and we feel utterly exhausted. Having driven over 700km from Tokyo's Narita airport over the past couple of days to make it this far, it is perhaps inevitable.
